Paulina Rubio: Latina and Proud

December 3, 2004 -- Paulina Rubio, the famed "Chica dorada", as her public likes to call her, has demonstrated that a Latina can embrace her idiosyncrasy and achieve huge success all at the same time. Her popularity has been monumental, her image is on the covers of major entertainment magazines from around the world and fans request her songs so much that her tracks are constantly on radio stations Top Ten lists.

Nevertheless, Paulina, who hails from Mexico, is enjoyed by people of all cultures. She also has a huge fan base among non-Spanish speakers.

A few years ago, she launched her first English-language CD titled "Border Girl" that later turned into a successful crossover album. During that time, she was able to still count on the support of millions of Hispanics, because even though she recorded her songs in English on that album, the essence of her music never crossed over. It never stopped being totally Latina, just like her. That is the reason why her acceptance has been so categorical.

In fact, there is no reason for her to change. Paulina swears that she feels "very Latina" and professed that the "love from moms and grandmas" is one of the things that make her proud she is Hispanic.

She wants her Spanish-speaking fans to know that she has not forgotten them, so on February 3, 2004 she launched "Pau-Latina", an album done totally in Spanish with the help from friends Marco Antonio Solis, Emilio Estefan and Jorge Villamizar from the group Bacilos. Paulina describes this new CD's fusion of rhythms as "Futuristic Folklore." The first single "Te quise tanto" has become a mega-hit in over 15 countries and the second single "Algo Tienes" is quickly following its path. In August, "Te quise tanto" reached the top of Billboard's Hot Latin Contemporary Chart. The industry has also acknowledged her talent and has nominated her for a Latin GRAMMY in the "Best Vocal Pop Album, Female" category.

So much popularity means lots of work and commitments. Paulina keeps herself busy participating in important events such as the closing of this year's Democratic National Convention, even though she declares herself to be a "peace lover" and explains that she is not interested in politics. She recently shared the stage with Ashanti, Fefe Dobson and Skye Sweetnam at the Pantene Pro-Voice concert -- a national competition designed to recognize the talent of young women who use their voices as a means of personal expression. Paulina admits that she practices meditation and yoga to alleviate all the stress that comes hand-in-hand with fame.

So much dedication to her music career does not allow her to plan any type of entrepreneurship such as a clothing line. She sends all her fans "a huge kiss" and she hopes to see all of them at her concerts.
