July
28, 2004 -- Marvel Comics, who brings us superheroes like
Spiderman and The Avengers, has announced the debut of their latest crime
fighter -- She's a Latina named Anya Corazón.
Anya, introduced in the first issue of "Amazing Fantasy," is a half-Puerto Rican, half-Mexican
high-schooler from Brooklyn who has with Spider-Man-like powers.
But unlike Peter Parker, who becomes Spider-Man when he got bitten by an arachnid, Anya - a phonetic play on the Spanish word for spider
(araña) - derived her powers from an ancient mystic clan. "She was created because we realized we haven't had a strong female character of Hispanic origin," says
Joe Quesada, Marvel's editor in chief who is Cuban-American.
"We set out to make her a Latin American because a focus of mine has been to make sure the company stays true to its roots,"
says Quesada. "Marvel has always been very good at creating characters of different colors and
backgrounds." "The fact that we have a large Hispanic fan base made this an easy call." Anya
appears on the cover of Amazing Fantasy #1 wearing a mask that covers her eyes, a white T-shirt bearing a red spider logo, black tights and snazzy red-and-black
sneakers. Quesada describes her as "a very normal girl who may be small, but got a lot of
spunk." A copy of this ground-breaking comic book is available for
purchase at our online store.
