Pop diva, Christina Aguilera donates $200k to
women's shelter
January 12, 2004 -- Pop diva Christina Aguilera sings about the alleged abuse she and her mother suffered at the hand of her father in the song "I'm Okay" -- but Aguilera did more than just sing about domestic abuse on Sunday.
The 23-year-old Latina, who hails from the Pittsburgh suburb of Wexford, visited the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh where she has donated $200,000.
Aguilera spent two hours signing autographs and talking to the 18 women and 23 children at the shelter in Pittsburgh's Oakland section. She also helped wrap Christmas presents for children at the shelter.
Aguilera, who now lives in California, was in the area visiting her mother, Shelly Kearns, for the holiday.
"Shelters are so important. I've seen that in my life firsthand, and I always thought that if I was ever in a position to make a difference, I wanted to do something to help," Aguilera told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for Monday's edition.
