Avon Foundation teams up with Salma Hayek to
address Domestic Violence
August
30, 2004 -- The Avon Foundation and actress Salma Hayek have committed $1 million over the next few years to "Speak Out Against Domestic Violence," a multi-faceted partnership to address the issue of domestic violence.
The Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program will focus on education, awareness, and prevention efforts. Part of the initiative includes a $100,000 grant to the Family Violence Prevention Fund
(FVPF) in San Francisco, Calif., to develop an interactive educational program that would be available online and in print.
The educational program will include "real life" scenarios, written in an accessible Q&A format, on the issues of emotional, verbal, and physical abuse. The program will also include a domestic-violence booklet, to be distributed by Avon sales representatives and via other channels. Users of the booklet and future materials will have ongoing access to FVPF experts regarding domestic-violence questions and issues.
The plan also features community outreach by 650,000 Avon sales representatives to support domestic violence education and awareness.
Hayek, who signed on as Avon's new global spokesperson for its color cosmetic and fragrance brands, will partner with the Avon Foundation to develop and promote the new domestic-violence program.
"I have a personal commitment to the cause of domestic violence and I know that by joining forces with Avon and the Avon Foundation, we can truly make a difference to the important cause of domestic violence and bring hope and empowerment to women around the world," said
Hayek.
The initiative also features several fundraising plans, including donations from the sale of selected Avon products and a concert scheduled for early 2005.
