This year's NYC Puerto Rican Day Parade will be dedicated to governor Sila María Calderón.

March 25, 2001 - During a recent press conference, President of the board of directors of the National Puerto Rican Day Organization, María Román announced that this year's Puerto Rican Day Parade will be dedicated to the governor of Puerto Rico, Sila María Calderón who will be the Grand Marshall of the parade.

"Sila María Calderón made history for becoming the first women to be elected by majority votes as Governor of Puerto Rico and her triumph has served as inspiration for the feminist movement at a global level," she said.

The parade is also dedicated to Ramón Vélez, president and founder of the parade and to the Municipal of Vega Alta.

The Annual Puerto Rican Day parade is celebrated every year along 5th avenue in New York City.  It is the biggest outdoor event celebrated in the United States, where more than 2 million spectators gather along fifth avenue to view the floats, enjoy Latin music played by bands and watch participating companies and organizations march. A parade which displays Puerto Rican pride, culture and the contributions of Puerto Ricans in the United States.

This year's Puerto Rican Day parade will have added security because of last year's incident in Central Park.  A full force of New York City police officers will be present.

This year's parade will take place on June 10th and will run from 44th through 86th street.
